Silk vs Satin pillowcases: which one should you choose?

Beauty sleep can get quite literal meaning the moment you realize that where you sleep directly affects your hair and skin. Cotton bed sheets and pillowcases are so fluffy and comfortable until you wake up with tousled hair that it’s impossible to brush.

Satin and silk linen have been exclusively used by royal families over the centuries, and in modern times, it seems like they belong to the movies. Reading in online magazines that the solution to clear skin and shiny hair is silk bed sheets can be a little disheartening considering the price point. The good news is that you only need a pillowcase to have a good night's sleep and not break your budget. But, should you choose satin or silk pillowcases? Read below to find out the pros and cons!

What is silk?

Silk is a natural protein fiber produced by silkworm cocoons. It’s a type of fabric used for centuries, but it was accidentally discovered in China in 3000 BCE by then-Chinese Emperor’s concubine Lei Zu when a silkworm fell into her cup of tea, and she was astonished at the soft, silky strands of the cocoon.

Silk pillowcases have very soft fibers and a luxurious feeling. They can improve the quality of your sleep as well as your hair and skin.

What are the benefits of silk pillowcases?

  1. Silk can create a very soft and, at first glance, delicate fabric, but in reality, silk fibers are so strong that they are compared to steel.
  2. Silk produced from silkworms has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and hypoallergenic properties and is suitable for people with sensitive skin and respiratory issues.
  3. Hair care. The smoothness of the silk pillowcases can reduce friction, frizziness, split ends, and hair breakage.
  4. Silk pillowcases keep the moisture in the hair and skin, unlike cotton pillowcases that soak up moisture.
  5. Silk protects you from night sweats and can keep you warm in winter and cold in summer.
  6. Since it’s made from natural fibers, it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.

The drawback of silk is that it’s pricey, not vegan, and needs special care to wash.

What is satin?

Unlike silk, satin isn't a fabric but a type of weave. It was originally made out of silk fibers, but now it can be made with polyester or nylon, making it more affordable and accessible. Satin is known for having one glossy surface and one dull one.

What are the benefits of satin pillowcases?

  1. Satin is cheaper than silk.
  2. The glossy finish of satin makes it look luxurious.
  3. Hair care. The slippery and glossy surface of satin pillowcases reduces the friction of the hair, with the pillowcase preventing frizziness and tangling.
  4. Hypoallergenic and sensitive skin friendly.
  5. It doesn’t absorb moisture and oil from hair and skin, unlike cotton sheets and pillowcases.
  6. Vegan and low-maintenance (you can wash it in your washing machine)

The drawbacks of using satin pillowcases are that they're easily stained and snagged, and some people don’t like the over-slippery feeling.

The final verdict: silk or satin?

Silk is great for individuals who enjoy luxury and wish to step up their haircare routine a notch or two. Satin is excellent for those of you on a budget who prefer low maintenance. Both materials are smooth, shiny, and beneficial for your hair.
